HOW DO I BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR?

To become a qualified as an Instructor a member needs to complete the Instructor Development Course (IDC).  Credentialed teachers, as noted in the Auxiliary Manual, may request a waiver and be declared a qualified Instructor on the weight of their credential.  However, we strongly urge even credentialed and experienced teachers to complete the Auxiliary Instructor Development Course so that their instructional methods are aligned with those of the Auxiliary and Coast Guard and that they are better prepared to mentor Instructor candidates.

All course materials may be downloaded from the Coast Guard Auxiliary National Department of Education e-LIB.  There are four document downloads:
·         Instructor Development Course (Informational Content)
·         Appendix A Student Study Guide (Lesson Planning)
·         Appendix B Performance Qualification System (Task Sign-Offs)
·         Appendix C Mentor Guide (Instructor Qualification Check List)

The Instructor candidate and a Mentor assigned by the Flotilla or Division work together to complete all necessary tasks including: participation in program content items; completion of written lesson planning; presentation of an initial lesson lasting 10 to30 minutes, including questions; conducting a 1 to 2 hour program for a Public Education class or as Flotilla Member Training; passing a short exam with a score of 90% (may be taken early in the program); and, having the MT-2 Certification for Instructor signed by Mentor(s) and FC.  The Certification for Instructor forms are mailed to the ADSO PE/ID, Anne Cioffi, who forwards the completed paperwork to DIRAUX.
